Basement Mold

Along with your basement comes the risk of unwanted basement mold. This can take many forms as concrete is a porous substance and it is natural that a basement floor will get moisture due to it sitting on the ground. Even if you have a moisture barrier, this can get old and damaged and moisture can leak in. Regardless of the cause, there are steps you can take that will help with this problem.

If you have a little mold here and there, it is as simple as using a solution of bleach mixed with four parts water to one part bleach. Then there are products on the market that are specifically designed for removing mold. No matter what you use, you need to scrub the area where you find the mold until it is gone. Of course, using bleach or products to remove mold requires you to wear gloves and make sure the bleach don’t come in contact with anything else.

If your mold is a little more serious than just a few spots, then you need to take a stronger action to get rid of it. Scrubbing won’t get rid of this type of mold so you will have to seal it. Before you do this you will have to check your walls for cracked cement and go to the hardware store and find a product that you can repair the cracks with. There are many waterproofing compounds to do this. Usually this comes with detailed instructions on how to use it.

If you find that there is water leaking under your foundation, then you have an even bigger problem and will need to call a professional. The flooring will need to be removed right down to the concrete and this is something that you can do yourself. Just remember any time you are dealing with mold you have to wear protective clothing and seal off your basement so that it doesn’t get into any other part of your home.
