Buying a Log Cabin

If you really want a log cabin, but do not have the time to build it yourself, then you do have the option to buy. Log cabin owners do sell their cottages and homes just as regular homeowners do. However, you do need to have a home inspection before you sign on the dotted line.

One thing you have to be careful about with buying a log home or cabin is termites. There are those that have the idea that log cabins are not susceptible to infestations of termites. Nothing could be further from the truth. They are less susceptible to termites than a stick frame home, but the danger still does exist.

You do have to look at the distance between the dirt and the wood. Eight inches is a good distance, but if the area is prone to termites a larger distance would be better. If you want to be really sure, you should think about putting concrete around the foundation. This prevents termites from getting into the wood because they can't crawl up over the concrete.

It is important not to bury any wood on the property near the cabin. You can ask the owner if he has done this, as it will give you the answer without mentioning anything about termites. In some places, builders are allowed to bury wood right up next to the foundation. Check out the foundation to see whether or not it is concrete or a slab of wood. A slab of wood will put you at a greater risk.

If you notice a sheet of metal on top of the foundation, this is a good thing. It is actually a termite shield, which will prevent them from getting to the wood. The soil might also have been treated during the construction phase, which
is also a good preventative measure.
