Log Cabins

For most people, the idea of having a cottage by the lake conjures up pictures of quaint log cabins. These types of homes can take on any type of design you can imagine from the simple one-room cabin to a multi level home. However the simple cottage is what you would expect to find if you were searching for plans to help you build a log cabin of your own.

You do have to start at the same place as you would if you were building any kind of home – with a floor plan. You can cut pictures out of magazines or purchase a book of designs to see which type you like best or which one would best suit the surroundings. The land itself has a lot to do with the design you choose, so before you start getting the blueprints drawn up, you do need to have a professional inspect the land for you. This person will tell you whether you can have an 8 foot basement made of cement or whether you might not be able to have a basement at all.

For a great view, you do need to have at least one quarter acre of land around your cabin. This will give the impression that you have gone back to your roots with a cabin in the middle of the homestead. It will also give you lots of room to expand at a later date if you want to build on to the cabin.

Just because the cabin is made of logs doesn’t mean it will be cheaper than building an ordinary cottage. The same types of building materials have to go into the construction and they cost the same amount of money. In fact using logs for a cabin may be more time consuming because you do have to chink in the spaces.
